1. Profile

“Hi! I’m the best in the world. I’m the president. I run three charities. I have five businesses. I’m an author, a director, a producer, a foster parent and a farmer. I’m the best.” Says everyone on LinkedIn.

Who cares?

The only people who will stay on your page after seeing all of that are the people that want to impress you with their stuff. “Oh yeah, you too? I’m all of that and I run an orphanage and teach deaf people how to hear and I perform in musicals on broadway!”

John Nemo points out that the problem with most profiles on LinkedIn is that they are all way too focused on you. If you want people to like you, follow you and stick around with you — then you need to put a focus on them.

Whatever it is that you do, screen it through a prospect interest filter. John Nemo calls this “client facing”.

Stop focusing on yourself with your LinkedIn profile. Focus on your prospects and what they can get from you and you will get more engagement.

 

2. Groups

“Don’t build a mansion in the middle of the forest without a road leading to it.”

How do you get people to become aware of you? How do you get them to reach out? How do you find and get in touch with prospects?

“It’s the groups, stupid,” says John Nemo, calling back to some reference I apparently wasn’t alive for.

What an amazing development groups on LinkedIn are. Take a site made for professional, down to business, determined people (aka the best kind of prospect) combined with the ability to join or create any niche community possible (aka groups) and you have a match made in heaven.

Want to find more prospects? Join all of the groups related to your niche. Then, as John Nemo calls it, it’s fish in a barrel.

Obviously follow the rules of engagement. No spam, be interesting and put effort in, and shoot those fish in that barrel.

 

3. Strategy

Ok, so we’ve gone over the basics so far. But let’s get into some advanced strategy for LinkedIn take-over.

So we know that client facing is key to your LinkedIn success and groups are where you can hang out to meet, greet and entreat prospects. But you know how we can best utilize LinkedIn for our message, purpose or business?

Combine the two.

Create your own group. Post content in that group that is client-facing and gives people a good reason to join, and message and invite your favorite prospects from other groups around your niche to join your group.

You see where we’re going with this?

Give it some time and you have an exclusive group that you control that is stuffed to the brim with potential clients and prospects. Use this group to drive this high-converting mass of your favorite people to your content, message and products. Sweet.

One thing that probably goes without saying is to not abuse this group. No spam, don’t blast them with self-promotion, you know. Keep it useful to them and make sure to post things that they are interested in, and get them to post things too. Make your group an engaged community, useful to your niche, your prospects and to you — don’t make your group a deserted island of spam.

Keep your profile client facing. Your mom is the only person who cares about your accomplishments… and sometimes that’s arguable.

Keep in touch with people who are interested in what you have to offer and stay in the loop by joining and engaging in LinkedIn groups.

Rule the world of LinkedIn by creating your own group and funnelling the best-fit fish into your barrel.

 

This was a good one. Pretty short book, but chock full of ideas.

If you get the audible version be prepared to hear a lot of off-the-cuff jokes and attempted humor. It’s nice to hear how engaged and interested he is by being so off-the-cuff but a few times it could be annoying.
